PIANO MOVING SERVICES - SPECIALIZED CARE FOR YOUR INSTRUMENT
Pianos aren't just heavy—they're precision instruments with thousands of delicate parts. Town & Country Moving & Storage provides specialized piano moving services with the equipment, expertise, and care your instrument demands. From student uprights to concert grands, we move pianos safely.
Pianos are unlike any other household item. They're extremely heavy (300-1,200+ pounds), awkwardly shaped, and contain intricate mechanical and structural components that can be damaged by improper handling.
Why pianos need specialists:
-
Weight: Even small uprights weigh 300-400 lbs; grands can exceed 1,000 lbs
-
Balance: Weight is unevenly distributed, making them tippy
-
Fragility: Internal mechanisms are sensitive to jolts and vibration
-
Finish: Cases scratch and dent easily
-
Value: Pianos represent significant financial and emotional investment
-
Tuning: Improper moving can knock a piano severely out of tune
Regular movers often decline pianos or handle them improperly. Town & Country has the training, equipment, and experience to move your piano safely.

Upright Pianos (Vertical)
-
Spinet (36-38" tall)
-
Console (40-44" tall)
-
Studio (45-48" tall)
-
Full-size upright (48-60" tall)
Uprights are the most common pianos and the most straightforward to move—but they still require proper equipment and technique.
Grand Pianos (Horizontal)
-
Petite grand (4'5" - 4'11")
-
Baby grand (5'0" - 5'6")
-
Medium grand (5'7" - 6'3")
-
Parlor/Living room grand (6'4" - 6'10")
-
Semi-concert grand (6'11" - 7'8")
-
Concert grand (7'9" and longer)
Grand pianos require additional disassembly (legs, pedal lyre, music desk) and careful handling of the exposed soundboard and strings.
Specialty Instruments
-
Antique pianos (require extra care for aged components)
-
Player pianos (additional mechanical components)
-
Digital pianos and keyboards (easier but still need protection)
Step 1: Assessment We evaluate your piano type, size, current location, and destination. We identify challenges like stairs, narrow doorways, or difficult access.
Step 2: Preparation On moving day, we:
-
Close and lock the keyboard lid
-
Wrap the piano in heavy padding and blankets
-
Secure padding with moving straps
-
For grands: remove legs, pedal lyre, and music desk
Step 3: Moving Using specialized equipment:
-
Piano board (skid board) for grands
-
Piano dolly for uprights
-
Straps and harnesses for stair carries
-
Ramps when appropriate
We never roll a grand piano on its legs or tip an upright on its side without proper support.
Step 4: Delivery & Placement At your destination, we:
-
Navigate the piano into position
-
For grands: reassemble legs, pedal lyre, and music desk
-
Level the piano and position as directed
-
Remove all padding and packing materials
Step 5: Post-Move We recommend waiting 2-3 weeks for your piano to acclimate to its new environment before tuning. Temperature and humidity changes affect tuning stability.

Specialized Equipment We Use:
✓ Piano board/skid: Flat board for laying grand pianos during transport
✓ Piano dolly: 4-wheel platform designed for piano weight
✓ Moving straps: Heavy-duty straps rated for piano weight
✓ Stair-climbing equipment: Specialized straps and techniques for stairs
✓ Heavy padding: Thick, quilted blankets that protect the finish
✓ Ramps: For loading/unloading from trucks
✓ Furniture pads: Additional protection for corners and edges
Our crews are trained in proper piano moving techniques—this isn't something we figure out on moving day.
Before Moving Day:
✓ Clear a path from the piano to the door
✓ Measure doorways to ensure the piano will fit
✓ Notify us of any stairs, tight corners, or access challenges
✓ Remove items from the top of the piano
✓ Close and lock the keyboard lid (if possible)
✓ Don't attempt to move the piano yourself—even across the room
After Your Move:
✓ Wait 2-3 weeks before tuning to let the piano acclimate
✓ Place the piano away from direct sunlight and heating/cooling vents
✓ Maintain consistent temperature and humidity when possible
✓ Consider a humidifier or dehumidifier for extreme climates
